Transom manufacturing. Features of a hinged transom for pvc inflatable boats

The pursuit of excellence knows no bounds, especially when it comes to perfecting what you love to do.

Amateur fishing, no doubt, refers to such cases that require not only a reverent attitude and improvement of personal skills, but also the use of a fair amount of ingenuity and patience to create sometimes even unique and inimitable devices.

One of the essential tools for inflatable pvc boats is a hinged transom for mounting the motor.

Most manufacturers of rubber PVC boats in their product range offer boats of various types and classes, which is called "economy class" to "elite" or "extra" class.

However, among amateur anglers, there are mainly PVC boats designed for rowing, and these are mostly small-sized one or double boats designed for small ponds.

At the same time, given that both new and used electric motors for imported PVC boats have long appeared on the market at a very reasonable price even for a novice angler, many have a desire to provide their boat with such an engine.

In addition, some anglers in their arsenal have more serious boats and catamarans capable of providing normal movement with the help of outboard motors with an internal combustion engine, providing movement at speeds up to 12-15 km / h.

However, the small thing is to ensure a reliable fastening of the motor to the boat, and although the Internet is replete with offers of stores of various types of mounted transoms, real craftsmen always get a truly unique design, individual for each boat.

Transom and motor

Basically, mounted transoms are intended for the installation of electric motors of almost all modifications.

The power of an electric motor with a battery is enough to ensure a smooth running of a boat with two passengers at a speed of 6-8 km / h.

To do this, it is enough to install a small transom with attachment to the rear side of the boat or install a transom with attachment to the rigid base of the bottom of the boat.

To install a more powerful gasoline outboard motor not only a more powerful mounting design is required, but also a boat corresponding in its driving performance, therefore, when making a mounted transom for boats with gasoline engine should be approached more carefully.

Design

Almost all designs of mounted transoms are similar to each other.

It mainly consists of boards, mounting arches and eyelets:

  1. a board is a square or rectangular plastic, plywood or wooden board, covered with an appropriate moisture-resistant coating, 20-25 mm thick, with additional holes, depending on the design solution.
  2. arcs serve to fasten the board to the side of the boat. The arcs themselves are made of steel or aluminum, the ends of the arcs must be carefully processed, the chamfer must not have burrs and notches that can damage the boat's cylinder. The arcs can be connected to the boat by bolting or using rivets. Like the bows, the bolt heads and threads must be carefully finished.
  3. eyes - special rubber holders glued to the side of the boat for attaching arches. The eyelets can be both factory-made and handicraft, the main criterion of which is the reliability of fastening to the boat's balloon.

Materials for manufacturing

For the manufacture of the board, special waterproof plywood is used, impregnated with a water-repellent composition, such material is not afraid of moisture and is able to stay in an unfavorable environment for a long time.

Plywood is glued with epoxy glue in several layers until a thickness of 20-25 mm is reached.

After gluing, the workpiece is processed, the edges are rounded, burrs are removed, and painting is carried out in several layers.

How to catch more fish?

I have been active fishing for quite some time and have found many ways to improve the bite. And here are the most effective ones:
  1. . Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones included in the composition and stimulates their appetite. It's a pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to ban its sale.
  2. More sensitive gear. About reviews and instructions for other types of gear you can find on the pages of my site.
  3. Lures using pheromones.
You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading my other materials on the site.

For arcs use:

  • aluminum rod or pipe;
  • metal pipe;
  • metal profile or strip.

The main issue in the self-production of arcs will be welding, while if metal parts can be welded in any garage where there is electricity and an electric welding machine, then things are much worse with regard to aluminum structures, here you can not do without special equipment.

As for the eye, it is safer and cheaper to order a mount for safety rails in the store, they are made of soft but durable rubber, do not require additional processing and stick well to the balloon.

Nothing can be said about self-made mounts, this is a creative matter and there is nothing to advise here.

Manufacturing

As already mentioned, the board is made of plywood or plastic.

For this:

  1. a rectangle is cut out or rectangles of the required size;
  2. gluing is made;
  3. after drying, corners are processed- they are cleaned from chips and burrs, rubbed with sandpaper, impregnated with water-repellent varnish;
  4. junctions with arcs are marked, holes are drilled;
  5. additional processing of the internal surfaces of the holes is carried out– the holes are ground and impregnated with varnish;
  6. final painting with varnish or paint, dried until completely dry.

Arcs are made as follows:

  1. cut to size;
  2. arcs are welded together to obtain a rigid structure;
  3. welded plates with holes for fixing bolts or rivets;
  4. ends, welds are processed, metal is cleaned for painting;
  5. priming and final painting.

Tip: priming of the metal frame is recommended to be done with iron minium, and painting with hammer enamel.

The gluing of handrails or eyebolts is carried out on pre-marked places in accordance with the PVC boat repair technology:
  1. fixing points are marked on the boat;
  2. degreasing is performed glued surfaces;
  3. a small layer of glue is applied to both surfaces, and after a short drying time, the surfaces to be glued are pressed against each other;
  4. the resulting compound is placed under a press and kept until completely dry.

Installing a transom on a rubber boat

After completion of the preparatory work, the resulting structure is assembled:

  1. the boat is pumping up;
  2. the board is attached to the arcs and fixed bolts or rivets;
  3. the ends of the arcs are inserted into the eyelets and fixed;
  4. the correct mounting and installation height of the transom is checked.

Transom height

And although the device of the transom is a very simple thing, it is not out of place to measure it seven times and do it only once. This applies primarily to the height of the transom.

If the height is too high, this will create a certain inconvenience - the motor will be located too high, the propeller blades will be almost under the boat's balloon.

As a result, the speed and controllability of the vessel will be significantly reduced.

Conversely, the low position of the transom can significantly impede movement due to the immersion of the board in water.

In addition, too low landing of the motor requires a change in the position of the helmsman's body and, as a result, a change in the distribution of mass inside the boat, which can affect the safety of navigation.

Reinforcement of the outboard transom

To strengthen the transom and make the structure rigid, the angler sometimes resorts to non-standard solutions - strengthening the transom with side rods to additionally installed rail mounts on the sides of the boat or making a rigid base of the boat and a transom is rigidly attached to it.

In any case, as practice shows, even the most ideal technical solution sooner or later in the process of operation will require additional improvement and modernization. So there is practically no limit to perfection here.

It is worth remembering that additional items are rarely included in the package. Often lovers water transport want to make a real full-fledged vessel out of their boat. In this case, it is worth equipping the boat with a motor. Since it is unsafe and inconvenient to fix the motor on an inflatable surface, a mounted transom was invented - a T-shaped design that allows you to equip the boat with a motor.

What are mounted transoms

When choosing a hanging dance, you should be guided by several aspects:

  • the quality of the transom should be at a high level, which will increase its reliability;
  • correct fixation of the motor in the working position;
  • affordable price range.

There is no division of transoms into certain types, the distinction between them occurs due to the price category, the materials from which they are made and the manufacturer. You need to choose a transom very carefully, without being tempted by a low cost.

Due to a broken transom or fasteners, you can lose the motor, make a hole in the boat with its propeller and get injured. In order to extend the life of the transom and the safety of the boat passengers, it is worth choosing the right motor, the power of which will not exceed the allowable rate (5 l / s).

When attaching a mounted transom, you need to remember several important conditions:

  • the stern of the boat should be in the shape of a trapezoid;
  • there should be a straight section at the end of the boat.

Mounted transoms are made of special plywood with a special waterproof coating. If you choose the wrong transom, this can lead to disastrous consequences.

Types of mechanical influences on the transom

The hinged transom is affected by the motor forces:

  • pushing force;
  • the force of gravity of the engine.

The impact of these forces leads to the fact that the transom begins to exert pressure on the boat at two points. A pushing force acts in the lower part of the mount, and the opposite direction in the upper part.

The effect of the gravity of the motor depends on the material and construction of the transom. As a rule, the transom transfers its weight to the stern balloon or fixing lower elements (mounting elements and stern handle).

The negative impact on the transom and the boat is the increased vibration that occurs due to the operation of the motor. Such an impact can lead to loosening of bolts and nuts, which can simply be unscrewed. In order to protect the transom from such impact, lock nuts or lock washers should be used.

Dimensions

Today in the world the size range of transoms is standardized and it consists of the following elements:

  • height 381 mm - S;
  • height 508 mm - L;
  • height 635 mm - XL.

Each height has its own motor size, respectively. For PVC boats, only the S size range is used, while the L size is for boats, and XL is for large yachts.

In order for the transom on inflatable motor boats to be absolutely safe, several important points should be considered:

  • thickness parameters;
  • incline;
  • painting;
  • protection.

The thickness of the hinged transom for a PVC boat should be from 25 mm (with a motor of 15 l / s). If the motor is more powerful, then from 35 mm. The slope of the transom should be 4% (in extreme cases - up to 6%). Paint must always be fresh.

Popular mounted transoms and their prices

Today there are three most popular models of mounted transoms from different companies:

  • Mounted reinforced transom Limar has a high-quality fastening, which provides absolute reliability and safety. The price of such a transom: 30-40 US dollars.
  • Mounted transom SEA-PRO. This type is somewhat cheaper, its price is only 20 US dollars, but the quality is also at a very high level.
  • Domestic brands. Of course, buying a transom from a domestic manufacturer is much cheaper; you can find a fixture at a price of $ 5 or more. A strong difference in quality (with an equal price category) between foreign and domestic is not observed.

Before buying a transom, you should carefully inspect it for cracks and other imperfections. Even a small hole can lead to negative consequences, so you need to check everything in advance.

How to choose a PVC boat with a hinged transom

The aluminum version is much heavier, but it is much easier to stand on such a bottom on the water.

Transom reinforcement is a procedure that should entail reinforcement along the stringers of the boat along the entire length of the cylinder. Although many boat owners find this procedure useless, its application will increase the life of the boat.

Installation

One of the classifications of transoms involves their division depending on the attachment to the vessel.

According to this principle, they are divided into:

  • Removable. Detachables are installed on boats with outboard motors, and a popular way to mount a detachable transom is to mount it on a bracket. In this case, it is mounted to the parts located in pairs above and below.
  • Pasted. Glued transoms are usually spaced at an angle of 8 degrees. In order to adjust the position and height of the transom, movable pads are often used.

Summing up

Buying a mounted transom is a very important procedure that must be approached with double care. Thanks to the hinged transom, PVC inflatable boats can be equipped with a motor and move many times faster.

Many people in recent years prefer to purchase boats that are easy to use, which are distinguished by the simplest possible design. It is the simple design and ease of use that is one of the reasons for the high popularity among consumers.

These boats are light, so they are easy to move along the shore and in the water. They deflate and inflate making them very compact, making them much easier to store and transport.

The simple construction of PVC boats gives another advantage - the ability to upgrade. One of the elements that each owner of such a boat can bring to the design is a hinged transom.

The transom is a special boat fixture for attaching a removable motor. The fact is that buying a boat that is not equipped with a motor, and then buying a motor for it, it will be cheaper. In addition, if the motor is not built-in, then in the event of a breakdown, repairs are much easier. Such a device can be purchased, or you can do it yourself.

Recently, more and more people are trying to purchase the most convenient and easy-to-use boats, and most of them are inclined to purchase PVC boats. Some upgrade their existing boat on their own. A clear example of this is the PVC boat transom.

The transom is a full-fledged mount for a PVC boat motor, of course, if you make it yourself, it can be unstable and flimsy, although it all depends on how the transom was made.

In the manufacture of this device for mounting the motor, you must follow all the recommendations and take into account specifications PVC boats and the motor itself, which will be attached to it with a transom.

Transom and motor

It should be taken into account that such a device as a transom for an inflatable boat is not suitable for fixing an engine with high power. D

the engine installed on the PVC boat should not have more than three and a half horsepower, which enable the boat to reach a speed of about ten kilometers per hour. The fact is that the boat and the transom itself has a limitation on the weight of the motor.

When purchasing a motor, a PVC boat and a transom, you must carefully study the technical specifications.

The fact is that the boat has a weight limit, and the transom, which has a reinforced structure, has a fairly large weight, which increases the load on the mounts, and, accordingly, on the relatively thin PVC.

Such a transom is capable of holding a powerful engine up to three and a half horsepower, but it can only be worn on a large inflatable boat.

In addition, the power of the motor puts pressure on the transom plate and the stern of the boat: the more power, the more pressure.

Design

The design of such a device as a hinged transom for a PVC boat is extremely simple and includes:

  • plate;
  • Mounting arc;
  • Rymy, which are sometimes called bubbles.

The plate can have a square or rectangular shape and is made of plywood. The mounting arc is a bracket that is put on the plate, after which its ends are fixed on the boat with the help of eyelets.

Eyelets or buds are staples, the ends of which pass into a flat base.

Moisture-resistant plywood is used as the material for the plate.

This material is quite thin and light, and also has a smooth coating, which protects the plate from the effects of adverse environmental factors.

Staples in most cases are made of metal, in particular from rolled products, bent in a certain way.

It is best if it is stainless steel or steel with a protective coating.

Steel is a strong enough material so that the bracket does not deform under the influence of the load exerted by the operation of the boat's motor.

And the resistance to aggressive environments that stainless steel or coating has, protects the metal from corrosion.

For the manufacture of eyelets, in most cases, plastic is used, since it is a lightweight material that is resistant to environmental influences, in particular to moisture. In addition, plastic can be easily fixed on a PVC film with glue.

Manufacturing

In order to make a transom for a PVC inflatable boat, you will need a drawing. You should not choose a device for fixing the motor of the most complex design.

For self-production, it is best to take a transom of a simple design, especially if you plan to fix a motor of relatively low power with this device.

For the manufacture of the plate, plywood with a protective plywood coating is suitable. The thickness of the plywood must be at least ten millimeters. After cutting off the necessary piece of material, you need to grind the edges of the plate, since the PVC film is easily damaged. Special loops are attached to the plate, with the help of which the plate will subsequently be connected to a metal bracket.

Mounting arches are made of rolled metal. You need to take a small metal bar, about ten to fifteen millimeters in diameter, and bend it in a certain way. You can bend the bar using a special machine or using a workbench and a hammer.

Frames can be purchased separately.

The entire structure is assembled immediately before installation on an inflatable boat.

Installing a transom on a rubber boat

Mounting the transom on an inflatable boat made of PVC film is carried out as follows:

  • First you need to inflate the boat to secure the eyelets. The fact is that this structural element of the transom is attached to the surface of the boat with glue. It is necessary to smear the base with an adhesive composition, then attach the bulb to the surface of the boat. Then the procedure is repeated for other rims. It is worth observing the distance between these elements, based on the dimensions of the mounting arc and the plate. After the glue has completely dried, the boat must be blown off.
  • It is necessary to connect the mounting arc and the plate.
  • L the shoe must be half inflated and the ends of the mounting arc placed, bent in a certain way, into eyelets. After that, the boat is inflated completely. Thus, the entire structure is securely fixed on the PVC inflatable boat.

Transom height

The height of the transom, that is, the size of the plate, is determined by the height of the boat when inflated. The transom for a PVC boat should be equal to this value or be a little less or more, the main thing is that the motor can be conveniently fixed.

Reinforcement of the outboard transom

The standard transom includes two brackets and four eyes, but if you need to make a reinforced mount for the motor of an inflatable boat, then you can take more brackets, respectively, you will need more eyes.

However, as mentioned above, you should not be zealous in this, because in this case the transom will have a lot of weight, which means it will exert an increased load on the material of the boat.

Appointment of mounted transoms for boats

Mounted transoms intended for the installation of electrical or gasoline engines on the stern of PVC boats, in which there are no stationary devices for placing the engine. At the same time, the original design of the inflatable boat practically does not change. Using a hinged transom on a PVC boat, you can install a motor with a maximum power of up to 5-6 hp, which will allow it to reach speeds of up to 12 km / h.

The design of a hinged transom for a PVC inflatable boat

The design of the hinged transom consists of a board, an eye and a mounting arc. The board is a square or rectangular slab of moisture-resistant laminated plywood or durable plastic with a thickness of about 20-25 mm. This plate is mounted to the boat using an arc made of steel or aluminum profile, which is fixed in special transom hooks and inserted into the holes of the eyelets previously glued to the boat cylinder. All elements are compact and, according to reviews, are easily installed on a lowered vessel. The number of fasteners may vary (depending on design features individual models of mounted transoms for PVC boats).

An important element of any inflatable motor boat is the transom - a fairly rigid plate, which is primarily intended for fastening outboard motor. The width of such a plate is equal to the width of the vessel or slightly less.

The transom must have considerable strength and withstand a number of loads, in particular the load from the motor used. Also, it must be technically combined with the overall design of a particular boat model.

If we consider plastic and aluminum boats, then they are necessarily equipped with a powerful built-in transom, on which high-power motors can be installed. But this article will be devoted specifically to transoms. inflatable boats, read more below.

The standard deadwood height is 381 mm, however, even in motors of the same manufacturer, it can differ by 20-25 mm. Thanks to the optimal position of the motor, increase speed boats and reduce spatter behind the stern.

If you are installing an engine and anti-cavitation plate is below the recommended limits, you can loosen the screws and set the desired transom height, and then carry out test runs, having previously secured the plate.

If the outboard motor needs to be replaced, the transom can be adjusted to the features of the new engine, namely to the length of its deadwood. Unnecessary screw holes can subsequently be covered with sealant, and then you can select the desired height of the motor mounting by fixing the plate in the desired position.

If the height is chosen correctly, you will be able to achieve by such procedures an increase in the speed of the boat. At the same time, fuel consumption and splash formation will also decrease.

There are many important differences between the designs of motor and rowing boats. Boats intended for use with outboard motor, have a rigid transom, which serves to mount the motor. Motor boats differ from each other in engine power and bottom design features.

In boats that are designed to use a small engine with a power of 2-3 hp, the bottom is made inflatable or reinforced with transverse rails, while boats with more powerful engines have rigid floorboards, which make it easier and safer to plan at high speeds.

There is another type of boat - Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB), "rigid inflatable boats". Such inflatable boats have a V-shaped bottom made of plastic or aluminum. This type of boat is characterized by a number of advantages, including the presence of a solid bottom, the ability to use engines with a power of up to 150 hp, and high rates of developed speed. In addition, RIB boats are not too heavy.

For the safe and efficient use of an inflatable boat, the specifications of the transom itself are important. First of all, this concerns its thickness, the angle of inclination during installation, as well as the quality of the transom coating.

In the issue of transom thickness, the main role is played by the maximum engine power, which will be installed on the boat in the future. For example, if it is planned to install a motor with a power of up to 15 hp. , then the transom must have a thickness of at least 2.5 cm. If the motor used is even more powerful, the thickness should be 3.5 cm or more.

Boat transom angle

An important role is played by the angle of inclination of the transom. Its limits are 4-6 degrees. Such indicators are calculated for the use of imported motors, which are most often used in our territory.

The fulfillment of the specified conditions for the inclination of the transom will improve the operation of the propeller, and at the same time will positively affect the speed of the boat and reduce fuel consumption. In addition, the above angle of inclination virtually eliminates the risk of catching air in the propeller.

Mounted transom (video)

Having bought a brand new echo sounder, fishermen often have problems regarding the attachment of the device. Of course, the instructions suggest fixing the sonar transducer permanently to the transom. But, as you know, the accuracy in mounting the sensor is very important for its effective operation. In addition, a stationary mount can be simply inconvenient.

To solve the problem, you can use removable bracket-holder on the string. Such brackets are easily attached to almost any transom, without much effort and special tools.
